Best time to hunt or fish

A largemouth bassA whitetail buck

The bass and the buck share one clock. The best time is a window on that clock for the place you set.

Two kinds of window

A long window is the moon overhead or underfoot. A short window is moonrise or moonset. The long one is the wider stretch. The short one is narrower. Each window opens an hour before the peak and closes an hour after it.

The day

Days near the full moon or the new moon rate higher. Days near a quarter rate quieter. The strip marks that from one to four. One mark is a quiet moon. Four marks is a peak moon.

The calendars

Week lists seven days. Each month below is named. Stars mark the day. One star is a quiet moon. Four stars is a peak moon. One window is free every day. The week, the month, and the stars are for members.

Reading the clock…

The Word page has a Hunt / fish tab. During a window the word is GO. Outside that window the word is WAIT.

What the studies found

Collared bucks in Alabama were about 3 times more likely to be moving at moon overhead and moon underfoot on the highest-rated day than on the lowest. At moonrise and moonset, the high-rated days went the other way. The authors said the charts are inconsistent, and that deer movement still changes with the moon. Swartout and Ditchkoff, 2025 · Sullivan and others, 2016

Tracked largemouth bass sat deeper on a waxing moon in spring and summer. How far they swam did not follow a repeatable moon pattern. The authors said a table of moon hours may be a weak way to pick the hour to fish. Hanson and others, 2008

Across 341,959 muskie catches, more fish came around the full moon and the new moon. Fishing only the peak lunar day meant about 5% more fish than a random day. On one lake, anglers also fished those days harder, so the moon was not the only cause. Vinson and Angradi, 2014

These count movement and catch. They are not a promise of a fish or a deer.

For entertainment purposes only. Results are not guaranteed. Moonmark times a decision by the moon. It does not change the odds, a house edge, a stock price, or how a choice turns out. A peak hour is not a signal to buy, sell, or bet.
